Experience — People
A wildlife trip alone is a half trip. The cultures of the regions you pass through — Maasai, Samburu, Himba, San, Hadza, Shona, Malagasy, Swahili — are the human half of an African journey.

What it is
Almost every safari you take will move through the land of a people with a long history and a living culture. The best cultural encounters on the continent are not staged "show villages" but the small, considered visits arranged by camps with long relationships in their local areas — meeting traditional farmers, walking with hunter-gatherers, listening to ancient wisdom passed down through generations, sitting in a homestead and being shown how a household works.
Each country has its own depth here. Each camp, each guide, each person, has a unique tale to share.

Where to do it
The most iconic East African pastoral cultures. The best visits are quiet, often through community-run conservancies that share revenue with the local Maasai or Samburu landowners.
One of the last hunter-gatherer peoples on earth. A morning's walk with a Hadza band is one of the most affecting cultural experiences available on the continent.
The Kunene River so remote that the Himba people living along its banks have almost no interaction with the outside world. Visits are arranged only with deep guide knowledge and proper protocol.
The Central Kalahari is home to the ancient San, whose culture is the oldest in the world. Nature walks with San guides explain medicinal plants, hunting tracks, water sources, fire-making.
KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. Heritage visits, traditional homesteads, the rich oral and craft traditions of both peoples.
Forest-dwelling peoples who lived in the Bwindi and Volcanoes regions before the parks were gazetted. Community walks led by Batwa guides.
Great Zimbabwe, the largest pre-colonial stone city south of the Sahara, plus contemporary stone-sculpture traditions in Harare.
A thousand years of trade between Africa, Arabia and the Indian Ocean. Stone Town, Lamu, Ibo, the Quirimbas — all UNESCO and pre-UNESCO heritage.
A blend of African, Asian and European cultures unique to the island. Village stays and the country's distinctive music are the way in.
Modern urban Africa as a cultural destination of its own. Restaurants, art, fashion, design.
